George Holland, his parents’ only son, began working for the Canadian Bank of Commerce upon leaving UTS. Shortly after the war began, he enlisted in the 83rd Battalion, and went to England in 1915. He served as a bombing instructor with the 74th Battalion and a musketry instructor the 12th Reserve before arriving in France in May 1917. At the front, he served with the 3rd Battalion of the Central Ontario Regiment in the Canadian Infantry. On the morning of 6 November 1917, he was leading his men at Passchendaele when a member of the German Medical Corps came towards him to surrender. While Holland was speaking with the medic, a German soldier shot him in the back. His infuriated troops immediately killed the man responsible their Lieutenant's death. He is buried in Vlamertinghe New Military Cemetery in Belgium, along with Francis Vivian Morton, another UTS student.
